Clemson Freeride's DH Race - March 5th

by Brad Collins
Feb 16, 2011 at 17:21

It's that time of year again. You've been itching to get back on your bike for months and need a fun place to ride that isn't still caked in snow.

Pack up your gear and head on down to good ole Clemson, South Carolina for the 6th annual Clemson DH Race on March 5th, 2011! The race is open to absolutely anyone and no racing license is required. The trails are flowy, the people are friendly, and the race is a blast!

Each Spring, riders from all over the East Coast head to Clemson for their annual downhill race. For many it's their first time back on their bikes after a long Winter and for others it's just a chance to get their racing season started early.

Clemson's ever evolving trails offer something new for riders to enjoy each year. Last year they added some 20ft table tops and berms, but this year they have gone all out! A brand new massive wall ride replaced the old one, gaps and drops have been added, and new trail has been cut!

Here's the important stuff:

Cost: $25

Date: March 5th, 2011

Registration: 8:00am - 12:00pm SHARP

Race: 1:00pm

Directions: clemsonfreeride.com

Here's a couple pics to tempt you further:

Course is retarded fun. It's the closest you can imagine to being in a luge run on a bike. Once you're on it, you're locked in on rails. Saturday it had black marks on the berms.

And jd529, I am entering on my hardtail...rear brake only....and no gears, the stumpy will be just fine Smile

Wow i'd love to just ride that. Any one know how intense this course is? I just have a hardtail with a marzochi dirtjam pro fork but i dont wanna come all the way out to realize that this is way beyond my ability level

Course is easy, but lots o fun. Lots of jumps, most are tables. The couple gaps have go-arounds, which the newbs will use. Been a couple years since I've been there and I know they've added some new stuff--not sure about that.

I was wondering if it would be feasible to show up on a Stumpjumper FSR. Would a 5.5" trail bike survive something like this?

flag collin7 (Feb 21, 2011 at 11:01)
Definitely would man. Id recommend a more AM style set up with maybe a shorter stem and drop that seat a bit... but people ride 5 and 6 inch bikes a lot out here. I'm not super familiar with the stumpjumpers geometry but I'd imagine it would handle it just fine.

Is practice and like walk through during the registration period?
  • + 1
flag collin7 (Feb 22, 2011 at 9:44)
Yeah, practice runs will be going on until around 12:30. Also, our course is open all days prior to the race to the public. Feel free to ride then but watch for people doing last minute trail work and try to avoid any fresh packed dirt if possible!

Is the course easy to locate? I ride in the Issaqueena trails just about every weekend & would love to take a run on this.
  • + 1
flag collin7 (Feb 23, 2011 at 9:04)
Not bad at all if you know the Clemson Area! On Issaqueena, there is a boat ramp (opposite side of the lake from the XC lake trail). The bottom of the course is located just down the road from that boat ramp in the next parking lot. There is a shelter down there along with some picnic tables. Hike up the fire road just to the left of the shelter and it will take you to the top of the course.
